Tanzanian TEX (Tanzania Extra) Grade coffee is a lower-grade arabica comprising defective beans, often broken, immature, or damaged, sourced from Bourbon, Kent, and Nyassa varietals grown at 1,400-1,800m in volcanic regions like Kilimanjaro and Mbeya. Typically washed-processed—depulping, 12-36 hour fermentation, and sun-drying—or occasionally natural-processed, these beans (screen size below 16/64 inches, ~6 mm) yield an inconsistent, low-quality cup. Expect muted acidity, with earthy, herbaceous, or off-flavors, a thin, uneven body, and a short finish. Scoring below 82 SCA, TEX is used in low-cost blends or instant coffee, offering a basic, flawed taste of Tanzania’s coffee heritage.
