Uganda Trace (defective) Robusta coffee is a low-grade category encompassing beans with significant defects, such as full blacks, sour or discolored grains, severe insect damage, pods, parchment, or foreign matter, sourced from Coffea canephora varietals grown at 900-1,500m in Uganda’s central and western regions like Buganda and Bunyoro. As the world’s second-largest Robusta producer, Uganda classifies these under standards allowing up to 1% secondary defects (partial blacks, withered, broken chips) but higher primary defect tolerances. Typically natural-processed—sun-drying whole cherries for 10-21 days—these beans yield an inconsistent, flawed cup with low acidity, harsh earthy or fermented notes, woody bitterness, and off-flavors like mustiness. The body is thin and uneven, with a short, unpleasant finish. Scoring below 80 SCA, Uganda Trace Robusta is used in low-cost blends, instant coffee, or industrial applications, supporting smallholder economies but lacking the quality of screened grades.
