Kenya AA coffee, graded as screen 17/18, stands as the largest and most coveted bean size in Kenya's rigorous classification system, embodying the nation's reputation for producing some of the world's finest arabica coffees. This premium grade refers to beans meticulously sorted through vibrating sieves with precisely machined holes measuring 17/64 to 18/64 of an inch (approximately 6.8 mm in diameter), retaining only the boldest, most uniform specimens while smaller AB or C grades pass through. As the top tier, AA commands the highest auction prices at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange, where cooperatives from volcanic regions like Mount Kenya, Kirinyaga, and Kericho vie for buyers. Grown predominantly from SL28 and SL34 varietals—hybrids selected in the 1930s for disease resistance and flavor—these beans thrive at altitudes exceeding 1,500 meters (4,900 feet), often up to 2,000 meters, in nutrient-rich, red volcanic soils. The cool, misty highland climate and bimodal rainfall patterns (March-May and October-December harvests) slow cherry maturation, concentrating sugars and acids for unparalleled complexity.
